MİMARLIK AGENDA

The Fact of Earthquake of Turkey from the Perspective of the Chamber of Architects / Zeynep Eres

“In Turkey, earthquakes are regarded as natural disasters and considered as ‘fate’, so the destruction and deaths can be considered ‘natural’. It is not yet deeply internalized that earthquakes are a normal natural phenomenon, that they should be expected to occur at certain intervals at certain magnitudes. Thus, buildings, the built environment, and the cities should be designed to withstand these expected earthquakes.

Due to the unconditional acceptance of the devastating damage caused by earthquakes, although earthquakes occur frequently in different parts of the country, we listen as if for the first time, even though scientists explain the same topics over and over again. Immediately after an earthquake, the poor quality of buildings, low cement content in concrete, faulty structural system designs, and user interventions such as column cutting come to the agenda. However, this awareness does not translate into practice.”

“Although new building regulations and inspection systems seem to have raised awareness, the recent earthquake showed that the past experiences of earthquakes have not been fully drawn upon and that all the acute problems experienced in 1999, that is, the approach that prioritizes rent and rejects science, continues.”
